Sound Source Verification 

Sound Source Verification (SSV) is used to evaluate how accurately sound propagation models predict the propagation of anthropogenic sound, including sound produced by geophysical survey sources, under real-world operating conditions. Empirical SSV measurements help validate and refine these models, improving confidence that modeled exposure estimates reflect actual acoustic conditions and providing a stronger scientific basis for environmental assessments and mitigation decisions. 

Regulatory agencies are increasingly requiring SSV measurements as a licensing condition to evaluate model performance and to improve understanding of sound fields generated during survey operations. While SSV provides valuable information for model evaluation and refinement, project-specific SSV should not be required where propagation models have already been validated for environmental assessment and decision-making. SSV should be viewed as a tool for improving and validating modeling approaches, rather than as a mitigation measure or a routine project-specific requirement. 

Because oceanographic conditions vary spatially and temporally, SSV measurements represent only a snapshot of environmental conditions at the time of data collection and may not be broadly representative of conditions encountered throughout a survey area or across seasons. In dynamic environments such as the Gulf of America, where water column properties can change substantially over relatively short distances and time periods, project-specific SSV requirements may provide only limited additional information beyond well-established propagation models while imposing a substantial operational burden. 

Generic sound source studies for representative habitats are more efficient, useful, and verifiable when coupled with field studies than survey-specific SSV requirements. EnerGeo Alliance does not support project-specific SSV requirements because they impose a significant operational burden while providing limited additional scientific value.
